La Sirenetta festeggia oggi i suoi 20 anni [uscì proprio il 17 novembre 1989 nei cinema americani, dando una bella rinfrescata dovuta all'animazione e alla Disney], e i registi e i compositori del film spiegano come questo magico lavoro d'arte è diventato parte del nostro mondo.E' difficile crederci ma sono passati 20 anni da quando la Sirenetta si è tuffata nei cuori e nelle immaginazioni di tutto il mondo, così indelebilmente questo bellissimo film animato ha lasciato la sua impronta negli amanti delle fiabe sia giovani che non.
Ma quest'anno il tanto animato classico Disney festeggia davvero il suo 20° anniversario, guarda caso proprio mentre La Principessa e il Ranocchio si appresta ad uscire nelle sale. Dopotutto entrambi i film sono diretti da Ron Clements e John Musker, ed entrambi i film segnano - dopo un perido dormiente - un incredibile ritorno all'animazione delle fiabe musicali in 2D che lo studio ha inventato e stabilito come forma d'arte. E proprio come questa evocativa fiaba sottomarina ha ringiovanito tutto di un colpo il genere dei film animati, dando vita ad una nuova epoca d'oro dell'animazione - che ha compreso film come La Bella e la Bestia, Aladdin, Il Re Leone, Pocahontas, Il Gobbo di Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan e Tarzan - così anche La Principessa e il Ranocchio prelude a un rinnovato vigore creativo presso i Walt Dinsney Animation Studios, sotto l'appassionata amministrazione di John Lasseter.
Basato sulla storia di Christian Andersen, la Sirenetta ci ha presentato nel 1989 Ariel, una ragazza sirena dai luminosi capelli rossi che si innamora a prima vista del principe Eric e decide di lasciare il suo mondo acquatico per vivere in quello umano. Così improbabile come può suonare oggi, La Sirenetta è stato un film che stava per non essere realizzato. Nel gennaio del 1985 l'allora amministratore delegato della Disney, Michael Eisner e il presidente dello studio Jeffrey Katzenberg organizzarono un "Gong Show", che essenzialmente era un'opportunità brutalmente onesta per gli scrittori e i registi della compagnia per poter presentare le loro idee. Come ricorda John Musker la convivialità non era proprio in programma. "Dovevamo saltarcene fuori con cinque idee, ma ci hanno anche detto 'Sapete, è già tardi, date il vostro meglio'", ricorda, sorridendo ironicamente. Ron iniziò a leggere il suo trattamento di due pagine per La Sireneta ma venne scartata subito! Jeffry disse, 'No, è come Splash. Scordatelo. Fine'". Ma in un paio di settimane, un cambio accadde un cambio di marea. Visto che i coregisti hanno avuto a che fare con le ripetute richieste di Katzenberg, la Disney si è rivolta a Howard Ashman e ad Alan Menken per sviluppare la colonna sonora e le canzoni del film. "E di scrivere un qualcosa di romantico per Sebastian [Baciala], un numero raggae caraibico [In fondo al Mar], e qualcosa di molto seducente, in stile cabaret per Ursula [Mia triste anima sola].
Guardando alla Sirenetta e a alla Prinicipessa e il Ranocchio - e agli che sono trascorsi tra i due - lascia il dinamico duo registico in un umore filosofico. "Siamo più vecchi di 20 anni, ma entrambi i film approcciano materiale simile da una prospettiva un po' diversa," nota Ron. "Quando realizzammo La Sirentetta, credevamo che Ariel fosse una scoperta in quanto principessa, nel senso che è un'eroina molto più attiva e guida la storia facendo accadere le cose.
